Information on Influenza

Influenza is an acute respiratory illness caused by infection with an influenza virus. The illness affects the upper and/or lower respiratory tracts, is usually self-limiting with recovery in 1-2 weeks, but it can be severe. It can cause debilitating fatigue which can last for several weeks and can be complicated by the development of pneumonia, sinusitis and middle ear infections.

Influenza is spread from person to person by direct contact, by droplet infection, or by materials recently contaminated by nasopharyngeal secretions. The viruses causing influenza are a major cause of absence from work during the winter months. The virus strains which cause these outbreaks vary from year to year.

Every flu season is different, and influenza infection can affect people differently. Vaccination has been shown to have many benefits including reducing the risk of flu illnesses, hospitalisations and even the risk of flu-related death in children. The only way to prevent the development of influenza is by annual vaccination early in the Autumn before any outbreaks have occurred.

Medmark can provide quick and streamlined flu vaccination clinics on client sites to maximise uptake and minimise disruption to productivity.
